Association Guide

There are about 80 student associations within the Student Union. Traditionally the student associations are grouped into Nations, Faculty associations, by subject etc. They come in all shapes and sizes – and they are as diverse as their members. We asked our associations to briefly introduce themselves in English and have compiled the answers into this guide.

You can find all of the associations within the Student Union here.

Faculty and subject associations

Merkantila Klubben

We at Merkantila Klubben would like to welcome you to our great community of committed, dedicated, open-minded and friendly students. Our passion and thrive for Economic Sciences is the driving force of our student association, and by arranging different activities we want to consolidate our members (an approximate amount of 800 students at the Åbo Akademi University) to come together and expand their knowledge as well as their connections for future work life. These events can be everything from seminars and business events to academic dinners and excursions to different companies or cities that interest our members. As every student association, we want to see that our members can relax during the hectic study-time and therefore we do also arrange parties and gatherings that are not so formal, just so that you could have even better memories from your exchange here. Many of our events are open to other students than our own members, so if an event of ours seems interesting feel free to ask if you’re welcome to join.

You can come meet our board of directors and many enthusiastic members at our office on the 3rd floor of ASA B-building. Come grab a cup of coffee, or tea if you so please, and ask questions of our student association every Monday to Thursday between 12 and 13pm. You can also go give our Facebook page a like; Merkantila Klubben rf., follow us on Instagram and Twitter; @mkstyrelsen and add our homepage to your favourites: www.merkantilaklubben.org. If you have any questions you can email us at styrelsen@merkantilaklubben.org.

Hope to see you at our events and at the office next fall!

While the activities organized by the association are primarily held in Swedish, we use English at events with English-speaking guests. You’re always welcome to participate, as long as you have a student number with Åbo Akademi University. Teologiska Studentföreningen

Teologiska Studentföreningen vid Åbo Akademi r.f. (=the Theological Student Association at Åbo Akademi) is also known as simply TSF. It is a group for those who study theology or comparative religious studies, as well as everyone else who is interested in theology! The association’s prime aim is to unite students, especially theology students at Åbo Akademi, in friendship and to increase the understanding of theology in the world of today.

We arrange a wide range of events throughout the year. These can be regularly occurring events such as “ämneskaffe” (a small get-together over coffee with an invited speaker), or different student events such as movie nights. The heart of our association is our break room, “Mysrummet”. It is located at Biskopsgatan 19, in the white house next to Turku cathedral.

As a member of the association you will have the excellent opportunity to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea there for only 0,10?! It is important to us that everyone feels welcome at our events, and we strive to be a community based on mutual respect.

Vocalis vid Åbo Akademi r.f.

Vocalis is a student association for Speech-language pathology students at Åbo Akademi University. We arrange different events for our members, such as lectures in contemporary subjects and more traditional student events (sitz and parties). In addition, we offer our members various sport events.

Fysikerföreningen Quantum vid Åbo Akademi

Quantum is a student-organization for physicists and anyone interested in physics is also welcome. We arrange social events, like outside barbeques when the weather allows and parties with other student-organizations. In the autumn semester, we arrange a challenge for new students called “gulisintagning” which involves fun games to introduce them to the amusing student life at Åbo Akademi. Quantum is quite a small student organization, so if you’re looking for a group with good social cohesion and proficiencies in physics and mathematics, we are it. For news about events and info on how to become a member, check us out on Facebook and Instagram.

Nations

Östra Finlands Nation vid Åbo Akademi r.f.

Östra Finlands Nation is a small organization for students from Eastern Finland and students who feel at home in Eastern Finland. Despite our name, we do have members from all over Finland. We organize all kinds of events, eg. sitzparties, grill&chill, winterswimming and The Bearhunt. The Bearhunt is our most famous event and is organized every year in April. Here ten teams do different tasks in the woods and the best team wins. No real bears are harmed at the Bearhunt. Overall, we are a small organization with a lot of great members. Feel free to join us! You can read more about us on our website: björnskogen.fi

Åbolands Nation vid Åbo Akademi r.f.

Åbolands Nation vid Åbo Akademi r.f. is a student organization for all students at universities in Turku. The organization is originally meant for students from the regions surrounding Turku, but we obviously also welcome members who come from elsewhere. The important thing is that your heart beats for Turku and Turunmaa! Lately we’ve strived for including more international students; our website asna.abo.fi is translated to English and we sing some English songs at our events. Since our members study a lot of different subjects, the main part of our events doesn’t involve a lot directly related to studies. Instead the purpose of our events is to enable a break from the studies, to meet new people who are studying different subjects and mostly to create a comfortable atmosphere among students. To become a member, you can email us at asna@abo.fi or come and see us at the Gulnäbbsakademi! You’ll find more information about us on our Facebook-page (Åbolands Nation), on the website or on our Instagram-page (abolandsnation).

Vasa

Recreational organizations

Wasaspexet wants you!

We are looking for new people to join the amazingness that is this spring’s production of the annual student spex in Vasa. But first, what is a spex? Wasaspexet is student musical theatre. The biggest thing that differs a spex from other musical theatre, is audience participation. The audience decides what happens on stage, by calling commands to the actors, dancers and musicians. The commands can be anything from simple “Restart”, “Backwards” and “More”, to more creative like “In Norwegian” or “Like a dinosaur”.

The next production will be in spring 2018 and we always need people who can make costumes, apply make-up and mask, build pieces for the stage set, paint our backdrop, cook for the production, and, of course, throw amazing parties. If you feel like this is something for you, please e-mail us at spex@abo.fi, and let us now you’re interested. We promise, you won’t regret it!
