Fire at the Student Union building Kåren 17 October 2020
Yesterday, Saturday evening at 8 p.m., the rescue service received an alarm about a fire at Kåren, the Student Union of Åbo Akademi University’s building, in Turku. After the alarm, all persons in the Union’s business premises and the student accommodation Tavasthem were evacuated. The fire brigade has extinguished the fire. No injuries have occurred. The fire spread between floors, which caused smoke damage in the house.
Evacuated Tavasthem residents received support from Turku’s social services regarding overnight stays, ÅAS staff have also helped on site. During the evening, a bus was arranged where the evacuated could warm up, and food was also distributed. Crisis counselling is available for all those affected.
ÅAS has set up chatgroups for the residents of Tavasthem and the tenants of the business premises, where information is updated.
“Our biggest priority is for the residents of Tavasthem to return to their apartments as soon as possible,” says Annika Ojala, chair of the Student Union’s Financial Board.
Ventilation, cleaning and damage mapping have begun. A technical investigation will take place next week.
“The fire brigade managed to contain the fire, despite challenging circumstances. We are very grateful to all the authorities who contributed during the evening”, says the student union’s chief executive officer Susanna Häyry.
The Kåren building is closed until further notice.
